Joyce, Charles was born at Blandford, Dorset, in 1855, was educated locally, and after leaving school was apprenticed to the drapery business in his native town with Messrs. Knight and Backway, Salisbury street. About the year 1875 he joined the firm of Messrs. W. H. Smith and Son, and after having served them for three years at Blandford, was offered the position of manager of the bookstall at Newport railway station, where he was a familiar figure for an uninterrupted period of somewhere about 16 years. He then opened the present business in June, 1893, and is today the chairman of Messrs. Charles Joyce & Sons Ltd., 51 and 52 High street, Newport, printers, stationers, booksellers and drapers. In this business his sons, Messrs. Douglas, Claude and Cecil, are closely associated with him. He married Harriet Jane, the eldest daughter of Mr. William Martin, of Pimperne, near Blandford, and is the father of four sons. Mrs. Joyce was, at the commencement of the business, a valued helper in its initial stages, and for many years rendered ungrudging assistance. Both Mr. and Mrs. Joyce are honoured members of the Wesleyan Methodist body, worshipping at Stow hill Wesley Church, and have certainly contributed towards making some impression on the religious life of the county.
